My Take on the Call of Duty Franchise and the Future of COD
Hey guys! It's your boy Spooge cumming at you with a new post. This one is about Call of Duty. I don't really play that often anymore, I'm trying to play different games. Call of Duty isn't all that bad. I thought Black Ops was a pretty good game. Everything before it was pretty good too, although I'm not very fond of Modern Warfare 2. I just think what Activision has done to the series is wrong. They basically ruined Infinity Ward, Treyarch is probably next. I hope they don't do the same to Treyarch because I <3 them.
Call of Duty 1
I've only played a little bit of the original Call of Duty, and from what I can tell, it is drastically different than any other Call of Duty game. For one, the health system is way different. Instead of your health regenerating after a while, you actually need to pick up health kits. COD 1 was a PC exclusive game, which is strange seeing as the PC versions of COD are usually ignored now, like MW2 not having dedicated servers or modding tools. I guess you can blame Activision for that one.
Call of Duty 2
Call of Duty 2 was an amazing game. Definitely my favorite Call of Duty game. No kill streaks, leveling up, or unlocks, just straight up gun vs. gun. Call of Duty 2 gave birth to quickscoping, a type of sniping that most hardcore COD players know about. The single player was great too, it was one of the few games that actually lets you play as the Russians during World War II. I highly recommend checking out this game if you haven't already, because most people that play COD today haven't played COD 2.
Call of Duty 3
Call of Duty 3 wasn't as bad as everybody said it was. I really enjoyed the single player, Treyarch is very good at creating characters that you really get attached to. I can't really say much about COD 3's multiplayer seeing as only like 3 people actually play it and I can't find a game. But the multiplayer brought some cool things to the COD franchise, things that would make their way into COD 4.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty 4 is usually everybody's favorite COD game, but I disagree. Don't get me wrong it has an awesome multiplayer and an awesome single player, but it doesn't beat Call of Duty 2 in my book. It was the first Call of Duty game to not be during World War II, which was pretty cool. Although I enjoy World War II games a lot. COD 4 also featured a ranking system, unlockable weapons, attachments, and perks, challenges, and killstreaks. This was very cool, but it seems every COD game after this was just trying to copy Call of Duty 4.
Call of Duty: World at War
World at War was almost exactly like COD 4 in the multiplayer aspect, except that it takes place in World War II like the first 3 COD games. But what really makes World at War stand out is it's Nazi Zombies game mode. Treyarch did a great job in making something completely new that has never been done in the COD series, which is great because COD is lacking innovation right now. Nazi Zombies also has a rich backstory that most players don't pay attention to. Regardless of what other people say, I think Treyarch is great.
Modern Warfare 2
Well, now it's time to talk about good old Modern Warfare 2. What a mess. There were so many glitches when this game came out. The javelin glitch, where whenever you died, a missile would fall from the sky and kill anybody near you. They fixed this, but of course there were the hacked lobbies. Every time you tried to play online you would be put into a lobby with 17 other people on the smallest map (Rust) and the game would never end. After a while, that went away too, but people still hosted 10th lobbies, where anyone could instantly get the highest level and every weapon and camo. The gameplay was just as fucked up, seeing as there was a setup that could give you unlimited explosives. There was commando that could let you knife somebody from a mile away. Overall, the game was pretty bad, but there were chances to have fun. Going into Search and Destroy with a party of your friends running around with Riot Shields. They also added some cool new features, like customizable killstreaks and pro perks. The single player was alright. It wasn't very well written, but it had some epic moments. I have some good memories about this game, but that doesn't make it a good game. Not in the slightest. During this disaster of a game, Infinity Ward lost most of its employees, as they went on to form Respawn Entertainment, who is now working on a new game with Activison's rival, EA.
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Call of Duty Black Ops features probably one of the best written First Person Shooter campaigns. Gary Oldman returns to Black Ops as the voice of Viktor Reznov, one of the most badass video game characters ever created. The ending to this game will blow your mind. Nazi Zombies returns with 2 new maps: Kino der Toten (Theater of the Dead) and Five, which takes place in the white house and features Richard Nixon, John F. Kennedy, Fidel Castro, and Robert McNamara as playable characters. They have since released 3 new maps including Ascension, Call of the Dead, and Shang Gri La. They have added some new mechanics to the zombies game mode, like monkeys and some new perks and powerups, but it is the same Nazi Zombies we have grown to love in World at War. The multiplayer in Black Ops is nothing special. It is definitely more balanced than its predecessor, but other than that the gameplay is still pretty similar to COD 4. The new currency system is a nice addition, but its not game changing. Wager matches are fun as hell too and add something new to the game. I also really like the ability to make custom game modes, sort of like Halo but with less options.
Modern Warfare 3 and the Future of Call of Duty
COD is dying
Now Modern Warfare 3 is on the horizon, and I'm not buying it. Call of Duty is starting to go downhill, and MW3 looks identical to MW2. The series needs something new, but I don't think that will happen. As long as it makes them money they don't care. Call of Duty is becoming the Madden of First Person Shooters, a new game every year with zero innovation. I fear COD is heading down the same road as Activision's Guitar Hero series. In a few years it will be dead, but Activision doesn't care, they'll just find another series to milk.
I hope Bungie doesn't go down the same path that Infinity Ward has when they release their new game with Activision. But hey, Battlefield 3 comes out soon!
END
Anyway guys I hope you enjoyed reading this, I had fun writing this. Let me know what you think in the comments. I might do another one of these for the Halo series. Here is some Black Ops gameplay I recorded a while ago:
