Hey guys! Spooge here again and since you guys said you wanted to see some older games reviewed, I’m going to do just that. The game series I am going to talk about today is a Playstation 2 series Jak and Daxter. This is one of my favorite game series of all time. It was one of my first games for the PS2.
Jak and Daxter was a fucking awesome game. It was made by Naughty Dog, the developer behind the classic platformer Crash Bandicoot. Jak and Daxter follows a young boy named Jak and his friend Daxter, who is transformed into a squirrel like creature by falling in a pit of dark eco. Daxter sits on Jak’s shoulder the entire game. The gameplay is pretty basic, you have two types of moves in combat, spinning and punching. Throughout the game, you can find different types of eco, which temporarily grant you special abilities. You collect precursor orbs and power cells to progress further in the game. The orbs are like collecting gems in Spyro, they are scattered around the world. You get Power Cells by either finding them, or performing certain tasks. The game took place over multiple different environments, like beaches, jungles, underwater levels, and snow levels. Jak and Daxter was a wonderful adventure game, but it is pretty easy. I remember beating the entire game in 1 day before, of course that was after I already played through the game once before. Jak and Daxter was a fantastic game, but nobody expected what the second game had in store.
Jak 2 was completely different than Jak and Daxter. It took place in the future, in a place called Haven City, so the world was completely different. In this game, Jak was actually able to talk, and he was pissed. The whole mood of the game changed. Jak now had an ability that if he collected enough dark eco, he could turn into Dark Jak, which made him faster, stronger, and also gave him access to more powerful moves. Another major addition to the game was the open world environment, similar to Grand Theft Auto. There were now hovercars you could use to get around the city, and Krimson Guards that acted sort of like police. Jak now had access to guns, which really changed the gameplay a lot. Now instead of just relying on two melee attacks like the first game, the combat was more focused on using the guns. This game was very long, and I don’t think I could ever beat it as fast as any of the other Jak games. It was definitely the hardest game in the series by far, some missions are almost impossible. But I think the challenge makes the game great, which is why Jak 2 is my favorite game in the series. It may not be easy, but that makes it 10 times more rewarding once you beat it.
Jak 3 was another great game in the series. The game starts out with Jak being banished from Haven City and being thrown into the wasteland. He is rescued by Damos, the king of a nearby city called Spargus. Not only can you run around the desert city of Spargus, but you can unlock vehicles to take with you out to the wasteland, a huge open desert to explore. Each of the vehicles has a unique ability, and they are a really great addition to the game. But there is even more to explore. You can go back to Haven City, which is in the middle of a huge war between the Krimson Guard, the Metalheads, and the Deathbots. Haven City is being destroyed and it looks a lot different. They also added many weapons upgrades in this game, which are basically like whole new weapons. Dark Jak has some new powers and there is also a Light Jak ability now. Light Jak has a ton of new abilities like the shield, and the ability to fly. The game was somewhere in between Jak and Daxter and Jak 2 in difficulty, not too hard, but not too easy.
Daxter was a game released on the PSP that let players control Daxter for once. It takes place between the first and second games. This was another great game. Daxter was an exterminator and killed metalhead bugs. He had a bug spray gun, which got upgraded with new attachments as you got further in the game. This game wasn’t made by Naughty Dog, but it is one of the few games that was still good after the original developer moved on.
I haven’t gotten a chance to play the newest game, The Lost Frontier, but I really want to play it. I will probably do a review once I get a chance to play it. Hope you guys enjoyed, have a nice day! J
